So I cobbled together a hydroponic system that I think could be tentatively categorized as an NFT system from things around my house earlier this month. The basil seedlings in the picture are 3 weeks from germination and I added 1/4 strength nutrients about a week ago. Instead of an air stone, I’m oxygenating the water using a waterfall from three holes cut into the polypropylene growing container, but just today, I noticed this orange/brown gunk on and around the holes, mostly situated on the areas where the water is flowing. I suspect that this is algae since it’s growing in an area that isn’t very well covered by aluminum foil. This is definitely a crude system so I’m rebuilding it with opaque containers and bulkhead fittings to break the surface tension of the water so it doesn’t leak out of my system. Do you think this is algae? Would using opaque containers and H2O2 fix the problem?
