CBD Hand sanitizers are gaining popularity, especially this year due to corona virus, but do these cannabinoids offer any real benefits?

Nowadays hand sanitizers are an essential item to keep ourselves and others safe. They are readily available to kills germs when we don’t have access to soap and water. Unfortunately they also reduce our immunity to such germs, and can be harsh to our hands, causing dryness.

You can also find CBD everywhere now, it comes in many different forms including vapes, edibles, topicals, lotions, pet products and much more, but the main attraction of adding this compound to hand sanitizers is the discovery of it’s antibacterial properties.

Relationship Between Bacteria and Disease

It is well-known that almost all infectious diseases are caused by harmful bacteria. If we can kill these various strains of bacteria, we can kill a lot of these diseases. These days, the threat of harmful bacteria can be a cause of anxiety for many.

Antibacterial Properties of CBD

Research has show that the CBD is capable of killing harmful bacteria. The application of CBD on bacteria has seen similar potency to that of common antibiotic treatments. It has even been effective in killing bacteria that have become resistant to other antibiotics.

While the cannabinoids seem to have an antibacterial nature, scientists are yet to identify how it works.

Antiseptic Properties of CBD

As studies continue to look at the applications of CBD on bacteria, the antiseptic properties of the plants have also come to light. The cannabinoids appear to stem the growth of fungi and other pathogens, giving the immune system chance to catch up, and hopefully eradicating infections before they have chance to develop.

Additional Benefits of CBD

On top of the antibacterial and antiseptic properties, CBD is well known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which also a great benefit to have in hand sanitizers. When applied topically, CBD oil preserves and retains moisture – this is an essential aspect of topical applications, since CBD oil can penetrate the skin to achieve optimal cleansing and moisturizing benefits.

Terpenes

Apart from all the benefits of cannabinoids, terpenes are another type of compounds found in the cannabis plant. As well as providing flavor and aroma, they have incredible properties that make the plant itself resilient to diseases and pests – giving us insight into how the plant has developed resistance to fight microorganisms.

It’s not only the cannabis plant that contains terpenes, a lot of those plants that are made into essential oils such as lemon, orange and eucalyptus, also contain terpenes. Essential oils are often added to cleaning products for their antibacterial properties as well as aroma. We can take advantage of these same properties for hand sanitizers.

CBD Hand Sanitizers

While CBD has antibacterial and antiseptic properties, it does not provide any antiviral protection. In hand sanitizers, it is the high percentage of alcohol that kills many different kinds of bacteria and viruses. Alcohol-based sanitizers that contain at least 70% alcohol (mainly ethyl alcohol) will kill most of the bacteria.

Alcohol is potent because it destroys disease-causing agents by dissolving the outer coating of viruses and bacteria and exploding them. Note, this is different to using water and soap, which works by loosening dirt, grease, and germs from the skin and washing them away, rather than killing the microbes.

Rubbing CBD oil alone into the hands will not have the same effect as a CBD hand sanitizer that is formulated with alcohol.

The disinfectant properties of alcohol are enhanced by the properties of CBD; it can increase the chance of proper and effective cleaning of your hands against microorganisms, help to protect your immune system, and will keep your hands soft and supple to counter the drying effects of alcohol.

It is important to remember, that alcohol-based hand sanitizers may not get rid of every type of germ, the best way to protect yourself is to keep hands clean by washing them with water and soap when possible. When water and soap are not readily available, you will minimize your exposure to bacteria and viruses by using CBD hand sanitizer as often as you need to.
