The Dutch Fumble First National Recreational Cannabis Cultivation Tender

It is never easy being green. However, the cannabis industry is no stranger to overcoming stigma if not hurdles. Much less the grotesque ball drops of governments as soon as they get involved—from expanding access to basic regulation. The Dutch government has just been handed a reminder of that as its widely lauded first cultivation bid for the production of regulated recreational cannabis has embarrassingly hit the skids. It is not even something that can be blamed on COVID-19. Nor does it appear that the Dutch took any lessons from the highly controversial German cannabis tender for medical cultivation in […]

Netherlands to supply medical cannabis until July despite Brexit ban

The mother of a nine-year-old boy with a severe and rare form of epilepsy who was told Brexit would end the supply of a life-changing cannabis medicine that saved her son’s life has been given a six-month reprieve. Hannah Deacon said she was hugely grateful after being given the lifeline by the Dutch government, which has sanctioned continued supply of the medicines despite a Brexit ban on fulfilling prescriptions from the UK. She received a letter on Thursday from the Department of Health to inform her that the government in the Netherlands, where the medicine was created, had “confirmed that […]

Foreigners face ban from Amsterdam's cannabis cafes

Foreigners face being banned from Amsterdam’s cannabis coffee shops as part of wide-ranging plans to discourage organised crime and cut back on drugs tourism that have drawn mixed reactions from residents and business owners. Backed by police and prosecutors, the city’s mayor, Femke Halsema, has tabled proposals allowing only Dutch residents to enter its 166 marijuana-selling coffee shops, with the measure likely to come into force sometime next year. Government research showed 58% of foreign tourists who visit Amsterdam come mainly to consume the drug, Halsema said, while another study showed the city would support fewer than 70 coffee shops […]

Dutch high hopes for legal cannabis farms hit by nimby protests

A Dutch trial of state-regulated cannabis cultivation farms to supply coffee shops risks being derailed by an outbreak of nimbyism after locals protested about the location of one of the new facilities. The plans to take over greenhouses on the outskirts of Etten-Leur, a town in north Brabant, near the Belgian border, and replace blackberries with cannabis plants, triggered large local protests and a request by the local mayor for central government to block the scheme. Board members of the initiative, known as Project C, have now warned that the other projects will face a similar backlash once their locations […]

Cannabis Delivery To Ireland Is Here To Stay

In a huge move for the very conservative country, Ireland is now allowing prescribed cannabis to be delivered within the nation’s borders, so that legal patients no longer need to travel to the Netherlands or other legal, European countries just to get the medicine they need.  This is thanks to a new ruling from Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly, who was allowing a temporary delivery service due to COVID, to minimize the amount of international travel being done and make sure patients still had access to their medicine. However, this service to help licensed, medical professionals legally get cannabis for […]
