Detroit City Council Approves Adult-Use Cannabis Sales

The Detroit City Council approved an ordinance on Tuesday that will permit recreational marijuana retailers and other adult-use cannabis businesses to operate in the city. The ordinance, which includes provisions to ensure that at least half of recreational pot businesses are owned by city residents, was introduced last month by Councilmember James Tate. On Tuesday, Tate said that the ordinance is the product of two years of work “to identify ways to make sure there’s success” for residents of the city. Currently, only four of Detroit’s 46 medical marijuana retailers are owned by people who live in the city. “We’ve […]

Michigan vape ban was stupid from the onset, and state Supreme Court agrees

On Friday, September 18, the Michigan Supreme Court denied Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s request to uphold her emergency executive order to ban the sales of flavored vapes statewide.  In fact, the court even refused to hear her administration’s case, stating in official court documents, “The court is not persuaded that the questions presented should be reviewed by this court.” Ouch. This nefarious tale of gubernatorial ineptitude and overaction all began in mid-2019 with a supposed outbreak of mysterious lung ailments allegedly linked to “vaping.” Later named EVALI by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the disorder is indeed […]

After failing in the Michigan Supreme Court TWICE, Gov. Whitmer tries ban vaping again

Just two weeks ago on September 18, the Michigan Supreme Court denied Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s emergency order to enact a ban on the sales of flavored vapes statewide.   Her original reasoning behind the ban – which she first enacted way back in September 2019 – was the so-called teen vaping epidemic and the alleged surge in diagnoses of a mysterious lung disorder called EVALI.  The Michigan Supreme Court wasn’t buying it, stating in court documents, “The court is not persuaded that the questions presented should be reviewed by this court.” Perhaps their decision had something to do with the acknowledgement […]
