A Shift in the Air: Changes in Young Adults' Vaping and Substance Use During COVID-19 – Psychiatric Times

“Substance use is highest in the young adult age group, so we wanted to target this population,” Pravesh Sharma, MD, a psychiatrist at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, WI, and the study’s lead author, said to the press. “We would like to understand why they vape and what their attitudes were regarding the potentially harmful nature of vaping.”2 Before the pandemic, Mayo Clinic researchers were studying the potential harm of vaping to the respiratory system. With the onset of COVID-19, however, the survey shifted course. Rather than solely assessing the factors influencing vaping, the new, adjusted survey investigated […]

Opinion | It's time to make room for vaping in the harm reduction tent – TheSpec.com

It’s taken a long time but when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, the concept of harm reduction is increasingly accepted as both humane and an effective approach to addressing addiction by public health authorities and the general public. Safe needle distribution. Condoms. Methadone maintenance programs. Naloxone kits. Managed alcohol programs. These are all examples of harm reduction initiatives that have been steered by dedicated front-line practitioners and gained the support of public health advocates and some governments, although there is still much work to do. But when applied to smoking, the concept of harm reduction has not yet […]

Danksgiving Survival Tips for the Most Divisive Thanksgiving Yet

Are you ready? It’s almost “Turkey time” and if you thought all of the Thanksgivings of the past were controversial because of your “racist uncle” or “out of date parents” – how do you think thanksgiving 2020 will play out?   Not only is the United States in a current political grid-lock, the citizens are split right down the middle. My solution would be to literally split the US into 3-4 mini sections, and allow different political processes to play out. That way, if you’re very socialistically inclined, you can move to a place that resonates with your political views […]

Does Legal Marijuana Really Mean Less Crime?

The relationship between crime and marijuana has been debated for years. Some claim that marijuana causes people to turn to a life of crime and even though there’s no proof to back this up, it’s gospel to some. The criminalization of marijuana on a federal level already renders a large number of activities involving marijuana illegal, so marijuana-related arrests are always a thing. And critics look at the numbers (spiked up by marijuana arrests) and think the claims are true. Contrary to what these critics believe, extensive studies conducted on the relationship between marijuana and crime show the opposite. It’s […]

The European Marijuana Minute – 4 Cannabis Updates from the European Marijuana Industry

Highest Court in EU Rules That CBD Isn’t A Narcotic On Thursday last week, the highest court in the European Union ruled that CBD isn’t considered a narcotic since “it does not appear to have any psychotropic effect or any harmful effect on human health,” reports the Guardian. The ruling came after KanaVape, a CBD oil exporter in France who was prosecuted since the French law states that only hemp seeds and its fiber are allowed to be used commercially. KanaVape was making CBD oil from whole hemp plants. The court ruled that the French ban on marketing their hemp-based […]

Green Wave: Weed Stocks Continue to Skyrocket

November was a revolutionary month for the United States cannabis industry. Legal recreational marijuana went from eleven states to fifteen, and medical marijuana expanded further as well. Though those results remain a far cry away from the hope of nationwide legalization, the growth in acceptance has set a boom in the stock market. That didn’t happen immediately. The moments following the election, when it became clear that the Blue Wave wouldn’t cross over the Senate, stocks initially trended downward. That didn’t last long, but it’s also reminded stakeholders of how subject to change those particular investments can be. Continue Reading […]

Successful Cannabis Initiatives In Three States Face Legal Challenges

Prohibitionist forces in three states have filed lawsuits to block cannabis legalization initiatives that were approved by voters in this month’s election. Legalization measures appeared on the general election ballots in five states this year, and all were approved by a majority of voters. In Montana, 57% of voters approved Initiative 190, a measure to legalize recreational marijuana in the state. Attorneys for the group Wrong for Montana, which campaigned against the initiative, filed a suit claiming that the measure is unconstitutional because it allocates money from recreational cannabis taxes for specific purposes. Under the state constitution, appropriating money is […]

Vaping does not appear to pose any significant additional risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission – News-Medical.Net

Researchers in Mexico, New Zealand and Italy have conducted a modeling study suggesting that the risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) being transmitted via indoor vaping is not significantly higher than the risk associated with other types of expiration. SARS-CoV-2 is the agent responsible for the current COVID-19 pandemic that continues to sweep the globe devastating public health and the worldwide economy. Compared with exposure to regular breathing (without vaping) within the indoor environment, exposure to low-intensity expirations from an infectious vaper only increased the risk of transmission by an additional 1%. The relative added risk was […]

Understanding Genetic Combinations in Plant Breeding

Natural Selection Imagine a hypothetical stand of plants growing naturally. The environment will put genetic pressure on the plants. If a plant doesn’t survive the growing conditions long enough to reproduce, then it is selected against. The plants that do survive long enough to reproduce are selected for. Plants that do better and have more successful offspring will out-propagate the others. Over generations, as the successful plants outcompete the less successful plants, the colony will adapt to the environment or naturalize. Early Plant Breeding What is most successful in an area is not necessarily the most desirable to humans. For […]
